Related Historic Buildings

Many buildings in Barnard Castle are historically linked with St Mary's, several significant but 'redundant' buildings have found new uses over the years;
The Castle, built by Bernard Baliol (who also founded St. Mary's Church) in the 12th Century, and now a ruin, has one of the finest examples of a round tower. As a penance for assaulting the Bishop of Durham, John Baliol built a hostel for poor students which eventually became Baliol College, Oxford.
The 'Old Vicarage', Newgate , built for Revd. George Dugard, is now a very desirable private residence.
The school at the SE end of the Churchyard (National School 1811) has been sympathetically converted into flats.
The St. Mary's Mission Hall on the Bank became the Job Centre and is now an antiques outlet.
The Chapel in the Victoria Road Cemetery is now a private residence.
