Music for worship at St Mary's embraces many styles and traditions. Although we are fortunate to have had a choir singing regularly in church since 1882, we also aim to support other ways for singers and instrumentalists to use their creativity, skills, gifts and enthusiasm for worship at regular points throughout the year.

Robed Choir

The choir meet to rehearse each Sunday and sing weekly for the 10.30 am service. The choir also sings for Festival days, both at our Parish church here in Barnard Castle and also at St Mary's, the other church in our parish at Whorlton. Rehearsals take place at 9.45am-10.15am in the vestry. There are no auditions and we welcome younger members as well as adults.

In addition to our robed choir, there are opportunities to sing for occasional services (Feast Days, Holy Days and Festivals), concerts and special events.

Church band

The band plays approximately once a month for Sunday morning services. Instrumentalists who are able to read music confidently enough to play some hymns and perhaps some additional pieces are welcome to join in. Rehearsals take place in church on the day of the service.

Community music group

Each Saturday during term time from 10.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. our community music group meet to rehearse in an informal, fun and relaxed family atmosphere. They play a variety of music including musical theatre, pops, standards to classics. Children and adults from the absolute beginner onwards are welcome.
