Ginny’s Gruesome Graveyard tour

Sat 17 or Thu 22 July, 1pm - 2pm
St Mary's Parish Church

Calling all young history lovers! The Gruesome Graveyard tour is a chance to explore the hidden bits and secret sections of the St Mary’s Parish Church, and learn a little more about the grisly history of Barnard Castle. From medieval kings to the industrial revolution, we’re going on a journey through time…

We’ll also be answering that burning question: how do we actually know so much about the past? Bring your colouring pencils and your thinking caps, we’ll be getting creative!

Designed for ages 6-12.

What will we get up to?

We’ll be looking closely at the church and its graveyard to search for clues about the past, plus we’ll make our very own historical evidence, that people might use hundreds of years in the future!

Your tour will be led by Ginny, a real-life archaeologist with DigVentures. DigVentures are working in partnership with St Mary’s to organize the Windows to the World Festival as part of a wider project to bring more people into the wonderful church of St Mary’s.

Do I need to bring anything?

Bring your best colouring pencils and pens, but don’t worry! We’ll have our own COVID-safe sanitized supply to share as well.

We also recommend appropriate clothing and, if necessary, an umbrella. It may be summer, but this is still the UK!

Keeping you safe

In response to Covid-19, we are following public health guidance and may have additional measures in place, which are carefully designed to keep you and our staff safe and healthy. This means that you will have to wear a mask during the tour and while you are inside the church, with the exception of those who are medically exempt or under 11 years of age.

How to Attend

Are parents welcome?

Of course! Feel free to come along to supervise if you like. Unfortunately, because of the limited capacity due to Covid-19, we can only allow one adult per family. Please book one ticket per person attending, adult or child.

We also hold back a small number of tickets for walk-ins on the day. These places will be distributed on a first come first served basis. So make sure you come early to save yourself a space!
